W. Savage served as pastor for over 30 years.  He would ride the train down each Saturday and stay with the Mercers so he would be there for Sunday services.  In later years, when his health was failing, he would preach sitting in a chair.  Dr. Savage also served as President of Union University, a Baptist University in Jackson, TN.  The baptismal services were held in the Big Black Creek near the church.  For a look at the church today, go to <FONT SIZE="3" COLOR="#330099" FACE="Arial" ><A HREF="http://www.mercerbaptistchurch.com."
